ABC, NBC, CNN to Broadcast Trump’s Election Security Address via Streaming Platforms
Bdbusinessdaily.com – President Donald Trump’s scheduled prime-time speech on Thursday, focusing on election security, will not be aired live on the primary channels of two major U.S. networks and CNN, according to recent reports. This decision risks drawing frustration from the administration, which has intensified efforts to influence media coverage. The networks retain their First Amendment rights to choose what content to broadcast, but historically, they have prioritized airing such speeches due to their public importance.
ABC News confirmed it will broadcast the speech on its streaming service, ABC News Live, and radio platform, rather than its main broadcast channel. Similarly, NBC News plans to air the remarks via its free streaming service, NBC News NOW, but will not feature it on its primary broadcast network. A spokesperson for ABC stated the network’s choice, while NBC declined to comment. CNN, meanwhile, will monitor the speech for breaking news, offering a live feed on its website and subscription channel, CNN All Access.
White House Aims to Unveil China’s Election Influence
The White House is preparing to use the speech as a platform to reveal sensitive intelligence regarding China’s potential role in the 2020 U.S. election, which Trump alleges was stolen from him. Reuters reported that this strategy could include claims about whether China had the capacity to interfere. Some of Trump’s advisors express concern that intelligence gathered during his first term may not be entirely reliable.
“It is also very possible” Trump will touch on Iran’s current situation and the economy during the speech, noted White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. She emphasized that these topics provide further justification for networks to broadcast the address live, encouraging public engagement.
Pressure on Networks Amid Political Tensions
Trump has long questioned electoral outcomes, asserting without evidence that mail-in voting is prone to fraud, voting machines are vulnerable, and non-citizen voting is widespread. Democrats, including U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have urged networks to avoid airing the speech, fearing it would resurface debunked claims about election integrity.
CBS, the third major network, has yet to respond to questions about its plans to air the speech live. Fox News also remains silent on the matter. Meanwhile, CBS’s ownership transition under David Ellison—son of Trump ally Larry Ellison—has sparked internal tensions, leading to departures from the network’s flagship show, “60 Minutes.” Employees have accused the company of political influence in editorial decisions, which CBS has denied.
Ellison is currently awaiting FCC approval for Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a deal that could grant him control of CNN. Trump has consistently criticized the network for its perceived bias. The U.S. Justice Department’s Antitrust Division recently approved the merger, paving the way for potential changes in media ownership.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Media Challenges
Disney-owned ABC faces two FCC investigations, including one into its daytime show “The View” for potentially violating equal-time rules by spotlighting a Democratic Senate candidate in Texas. The FCC could initiate license withdrawals for Disney’s eight ABC stations as early as next month. Trump has also targeted NBC and its parent, Comcast, dubbing it “Concast” and walking out of an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker after calling the network “a one-sided crooked network.”
Comcast recently announced plans to split into two public companies through a spinoff of NBCUniversal and Sky. Analysts suggest this move might make NBCUniversal an appealing acquisition target. FCC Chair Brendan Carr is also examining Comcast’s diversity practices, a development that could further complicate the networks’ relationship with the administration.
