Heathrow Warns of Knock-On Effects

Heathrow Airport, located near London and the United Kingdom’s busiest aviation hub, told passengers to confirm their flight status with their airline before travelling to the airport. The airport said Tuesday’s disruption had altered planned schedules and could continue to affect services as operations were rebuilt.

“We are expecting knock-on impacts as aircraft and crew reposition,” Heathrow said.

The airport acknowledged the frustration caused by the situation and said it was working with its local NATS team and airline partners to bring services back to normal as quickly as possible.

“We know how frustrating this situation is and … are working closely with our local NATS team and airline partners to recover normal operations as quickly as possible.”

London Gatwick, the country’s second-busiest airport, issued similar advice. Passengers using Gatwick were urged to check directly with their airline before setting out, reflecting the possibility of amended departure times, delays or further operational changes.

Thousands of Airline Customers Affected

The scale of the disruption was reflected in the number of passengers affected by individual carriers. Ryanair said it had cancelled more than 200 flights, affecting roughly 150,000 of its customers. British Airways said it cancelled or diverted 100 flights, with tens of thousands of passengers impacted.

For travellers, the return of flights did not necessarily mean a return to the original itinerary. A flight may operate later than scheduled, use a different aircraft or be subject to a revised gate assignment. The shutdown has increased scrutiny of NATS, the UK air traffic control provider, and its chief executive, Martin Rolfe. The latest incident follows a previous major systems failure in August 2023, when disruptions forced airlines to cancel flights and created significant costs for operators.

Ryanair had already called for Rolfe to resign over his part in the August 2023 system meltdown. That earlier disruption cost airlines an estimated £100 million, equivalent to about $135 million.

Air traffic control is a central part of the aviation system, coordinating the safe movement of aircraft through airspace and around airports. When that function is disrupted, airlines cannot simply maintain their usual schedules. Even where an aircraft and crew are available, departures and arrivals depend on airspace management and the broader sequencing of flights.

The financial and practical effects can extend well beyond the period of an outage. Airlines may have to cancel services, divert aircraft, alter crew assignments and provide support to affected customers. Airports must adjust gates, baggage operations and passenger flows while handling a timetable that may be changing rapidly.
