Six Held in Custody Over Alleged Tk10 Lakh Extortion Attempt in Mohammadpur

Bdbusinessdaily.com – A Dhaka court has ordered six people, including two personnel attached to the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), to be sent to jail in a case involving the alleged confinement of a businessman and a demand for Tk10 lakh in Mohammadpur.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque issued the order on 25 October after the investigating officer requested that the suspects remain in custody while the inquiry continues. The officer told the court that preliminary findings indicated possible involvement by the six accused and that their detention was needed for the investigation.

No lawyer appeared for the accused during the hearing.

Those sent to jail

The six accused are Sergeant Al Mamun, 39; Lance Corporal Md Nuruzzaman, 31; Md Mukul Gazi, 26; Mahfuzur Rahman, 22; Md Ziaul Islam, 35; and Ansar member Md Sohel Rana, 32.

Sergeant Al Mamun and Lance Corporal Nuruzzaman are posted at DGFI headquarters. Sohel Rana serves as an Ansar member. The allegations against all six remain subject to the ongoing criminal investigation and court process.

Motorcycle purchase used as alleged pretext

The case centres on events that allegedly began at about 9pm on 24 October. Sohel Rana, described as a neighbour of the businessman, had developed a close relationship with him. He allegedly invited the businessman to a sixth-floor flat in Chandrima Model Town, Mohammadpur, saying that they would discuss the purchase of a motorcycle.

After entering the flat, Sohel reportedly left the room, saying he was going to the washroom. A group of other people then arrived, the complaint states. They allegedly prevented the businessman from leaving, threatened him and demanded Tk10 lakh.

The businessman had Tk70,000 with him for the proposed motorcycle purchase and allegedly handed over that money in an effort to obtain his release. The complaint says the group was not satisfied with the amount and again demanded Tk10 lakh.

He was allegedly assaulted during the incident, leaving bruising and swelling on several parts of his body. The businessman later contacted relatives in an attempt to arrange the money being demanded, the case statement says.

Confinement inside a vehicle

At about 3am on 25 October, several suspects allegedly took the businessman from the building and placed him in a white Toyota Probox. The vehicle was then driven to an area opposite Bangladesh Shishu Hospital in Shyamoli.

The businessman was allegedly kept inside the car at that location. He later saw a police vehicle when the people with him got out to drink tea. He escaped and informed Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police about what had happened.

Police detained five people at the scene and notified Mohammadpur police. Officers from Mohammadpur subsequently took the detainees into custody. Law enforcement personnel also seized the private car alleged to have been driven by accused Ziaul Islam.

Sohel Rana was arrested later that morning, at around 7am, in front of Allah Karim Mosque in Mohammadpur.

What the court order means

The jail order does not amount to a final finding of guilt. It allows investigators to continue examining the allegations, the sequence of events, the role of each accused and evidence connected to the alleged confinement, assault and extortion demand.

The case also highlights the importance of caution in private financial dealings, particularly when a meeting involves a large cash payment or a transaction arranged outside a formal business setting. The businessman’s alleged escape and subsequent contact with police led to the immediate detention of several suspects and the seizure of the vehicle central to the complaint.

Further legal proceedings will determine whether charges are formally established and whether the allegations can be proved in court.
