Four Held After Explosions Outside Jatrabari Police Station
Bdbusinessdaily.com – Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch has detained four men over a series of crude bomb explosions outside Jatrabari Police Station, an incident that injured an autorickshaw driver and prompted a wider investigation into similar disturbances in the capital.
Police said the blasts took place at about 8pm on 18 September in front of the police station. A case has since been registered with Jatrabari Police Station. Investigators recovered four additional crude bombs that had not exploded, preventing what could have become another dangerous incident.
Suspects detained in separate drives
The four people arrested are Md Raihan Uddin, 35; Russell Khan, 32; Ala Uddin, 28; and Abdullah, 28. The Detective Branch said each of them was an active member of an organisation whose activities have been banned.
Details of the arrests were presented by DB Wari Division Deputy Commissioner Molla Md Shaheen at a briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road at around 12:15pm on 20 September.
Shaheen said investigators reviewed CCTV recordings after the explosions and identified a person connected to the incident. Acting on that lead, DB officers carried out an operation in the Bangshal Police Station area on 19 September and arrested Raihan Uddin.
“We analysed CCTV footage and identified one person. Later, yesterday, we conducted a drive in the Bangshal Police Station area and arrested Raihan Uddin,”
Information obtained from Raihan led police to a rented flat in a 10-storey building on JN Saha Road in Lalbagh. The operation began around 12:15am that night. Officers found four unexploded crude bombs, wrapped with red tape, inside a sack of brick chips placed beside a pillar on the building’s ground floor.
The DMP Bomb Disposal Unit later rendered the devices safe. The recovery highlighted the continuing risk posed by improvised explosives, particularly when they are kept in residential surroundings where residents and passers-by could be exposed to harm.
Following further questioning of Raihan, detectives conducted another raid in the Dogair area of Demra and detained Russell, Ala Uddin and Abdullah.
Police cite alleged political links
When asked about the detainees’ political identities, Shaheen said Raihan had served as office secretary of Unit No 6 under Ward No 32 of the Awami League’s Bangshal unit in Dhaka South. The organisation’s activities have been banned.
Police said Raihan had also been arrested last year in an Anti-Terrorism Act case filed with Motijheel Police Station. He spent five months in jail before being released on bail recently. Shaheen said Raihan became involved in similar activities again after his release.
The DB officer said investigators view the alleged actions as an attempt to unsettle the public while also serving a political purpose.
“They are actually doing these things to create panic among the public, and they also have a political motive.”
Shaheen said incidents of a similar nature had occurred in several parts of Dhaka during the previous two to three days, and investigators believe the Jatrabari explosions were linked to that broader pattern. The ongoing inquiry is intended to establish the reason for the attacks, identify anyone else who may have been involved and determine whether there was coordination behind the incidents.
Investigation to continue
Police plan to seek remand for the four detainees for additional questioning. Investigators are examining mobile phones recovered or connected to the suspects after finding indications of communications with fugitive Awami League leaders.
“Yes, there are communications on their mobile phones. We are analysing those. More details will be known after they are brought on remand.”
The planned remand applications are expected to focus on how the crude bombs were obtained, where they were intended to be used and whether other people played roles in planning, transporting or storing them. The inquiry may also clarify whether the events in Jatrabari and the other recent incidents in Dhaka involved the same individuals or networks.
The injury to an autorickshaw driver serves as a reminder that such attacks can affect people with no connection to their intended targets. Explosions in busy public locations can create immediate physical danger, disrupt traffic and spread fear among nearby residents, commuters and workers.
For now, the four arrests and the recovery of the unexploded devices form the central outcome of the investigation. Police have said further details will depend on the results of questioning and the analysis of digital communications as the case proceeds.
