Ed Sheeran’s US Tour Loses Remaining Opening Acts After Macklemore’s Exit

Bdbusinessdaily.com – Ed Sheeran’s US tour has been hit by a wave of departures after every remaining support act chose to leave the bill in response to Macklemore being removed from the lineup. The decision followed controversy surrounding the rapper’s pro-Palestinian remarks and performance at a New Jersey concert earlier in the tour.

Macklemore, whose legal name is Benjamin Haggerty, appeared at MetLife Stadium on 4 September and called out “Free Palestine” during his set. He also performed “Hind’s Hall,” a track dedicated to pro-Palestinian student demonstrators at Columbia University that condemns Israeli military action. Images showing destruction in Gaza accompanied the song on screen.

The appearance drew intense criticism from groups and individuals who said the performance crossed a line. A petition was launched by the Israeli American Council, while StopAntisemitism also objected publicly. Singer Pink shared criticism of Macklemore’s performance on social media.

The dispute extended beyond the New Jersey date. Robert Kraft, the billionaire owner of Gillette Stadium, opposed Macklemore’s planned appearance at his venue and prevented him from performing there. Kraft cited worries about hate speech and antisemitic rhetoric.

Promoter Removes Macklemore From the Tour

Tour promoter Messina Touring Group later took Macklemore off the remaining dates after several venues indicated they could cancel appearances involving him. Ed Sheeran said the choice was made by the promoter, not by him personally.

In an Instagram message, Sheeran said he had spent the week speaking with venues in an attempt to reach a solution. He also explained that he has long tried to keep politics away from his stage, presenting his concerts as spaces where people from different backgrounds can feel comfortable.

“Place of safety and sanctuary.”

Sheeran said that idea matters especially because many young fans attend his shows. While expressing horror at the suffering caused by the conflict, he said he generally chooses to support causes away from the public stage rather than make political statements during performances.

That position did not settle the matter for the other artists booked to open the concerts. Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Beoga all announced that they would no longer continue on the tour.

Support Artists Say They Could Not Continue

Finneas said he believed performers should be able to speak publicly in support of people facing oppression.

“Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed.”

Lukas Graham, the Danish band led by Lukas Forchhammer, criticised the power held by venue owners and the role financial influence can play in deciding which messages reach audiences.

“Nobody’s bank balance should decide who gets to speak or which suffering we’re allowed to acknowledge.”

Irish folk group Beoga said it could not remain on a tour playing in venues that, in its view, had silenced advocacy for a Free Palestine. Aaron Rowe described his own departure as particularly difficult because of his relationship with Sheeran, but said he felt he had to step away.

The exits leave Sheeran without the support acts who had appeared with him night after night. The situation also highlights the difficult balance artists, promoters and venue operators face when political speech becomes part of a major live event.

Macklemore Defends His Position

Macklemore addressed Jewish audience members during the following night’s show, saying his criticism was directed at Israel, apartheid and genocide rather than Jewish people. The clarification came amid growing arguments over whether his stage comments and imagery were political advocacy, offensive rhetoric, or both in the eyes of different audiences.

He later praised the musicians who left the tour. Macklemore said his public stance had already cost him sponsors and personal relationships, but argued that neutrality was impossible in the circumstances.

“There is no neutral position between the oppressor and the oppressed.”

He added that if the controversy helped keep public attention focused on Palestine, the tour had still served a purpose for him.

“The most successful tour I’ve ever been on.”

The episode has placed a global pop tour at the centre of a wider cultural debate over Gaza, Israel and the responsibilities of public figures. For Sheeran, the immediate issue is maintaining an environment he says should welcome all fans. For Macklemore and the acts that departed, the central issue is whether avoiding political expression can itself become a political choice.

As the tour continues, the split illustrates how quickly a concert lineup can become a forum for larger questions about free expression, audience safety, venue control and the human cost of conflict.
