Woman Dies After Bus Crash Beneath Tikatuli Overbridge

Bdbusinessdaily.com – A 40-year-old woman, Rina Rani Ghosh, was killed after a passenger bus struck and ran over her beneath the Tikatuli overbridge in Dhaka on 12 October.

The collision took place at approximately 12:45pm as she was crossing the road. Police said a Doel Paribahan bus hit her while attempting to overtake another bus in the area.

Family Was Returning Home

Rina had been on her way back to her home in Wari after taking her younger son, Pithu Ghosh, to school in Nawabpur. She was crossing the road when the fatal incident occurred.

Her husband, Biswajit Ghosh, said the family lives in the Swamibagh area on KM Das Lane in Wari with their two sons. Their ancestral home is in Ibrahim Pur village of Nabinagar upazila in Brahmanbaria.

For the family, what began as an ordinary school-day routine ended in a sudden tragedy. The incident also draws attention to the risks faced by pedestrians moving through busy Dhaka roads, particularly around overbridges and transport corridors where buses, private vehicles and people on foot often compete for limited space.

Police Action After the Collision

Abu Bakkar, a sub-inspector at Wari Police Station, said police recovered Rina’s body from the scene and sent it to the morgue at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

The bus involved was seized soon after the accident, while its driver was detained by police. The detention and seizure are part of the immediate steps taken after a fatal road crash as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Road crossings near major intersections can become especially hazardous when vehicles change lanes, overtake or attempt to move ahead in congested traffic. Pedestrians are often required to judge the movement of several vehicles at once, while bus drivers must navigate crowded lanes and frequent stops. In such conditions, a single dangerous manoeuvre can have irreversible consequences.

A Safety Concern for Pedestrians

The Tikatuli area is a busy part of the capital, with regular public transport movement and a steady flow of people travelling to homes, schools, workplaces and commercial areas. Overbridges are intended to help people cross roads more safely, but road-level crossings remain part of daily travel for many residents.

Fatal incidents involving buses leave consequences far beyond the crash site. Families lose a loved one, children lose the support of a parent, and communities are reminded of the vulnerability of people walking near fast-moving or closely packed traffic.

Safer streets depend on responsible driving, meaningful enforcement of traffic rules and practical protections for people on foot. Drivers overtaking in crowded urban areas must account for pedestrians as well as surrounding vehicles. Equally, clear crossing arrangements and careful traffic management are important where public transport routes meet dense residential and commercial neighbourhoods.

Rina Rani Ghosh’s death has left her family grieving after a routine journey home. Police have taken the bus and its driver into custody as the case proceeds.
