Osman Hadi murder: Court defers submission of supplementary report to 3 November
Dhaka Court Extends Deadline for Supplementary Probe in Osman Hadi Murder Case
Bdbusinessdaily.com – A Dhaka court has again postponed the deadline for the supplementary investigation report in the murder case over the killing of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, setting 3 November as the next date for its submission.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is conducting the further inquiry, was expected to submit the report on 27 September. As it was not filed on the scheduled date, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam granted investigators additional time.
The latest order marks the 20th occasion on which the investigating officer has received an extension to submit the supplementary report. Roknuzzaman, a sub-inspector with the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Department, confirmed the development.
Further Investigation Ordered After Challenge to Charge Sheet
The case had already reached an important stage earlier this year. On 6 January, DB Inspector Faisal Ahmed, then serving as the investigating officer, submitted a charge sheet naming 17 accused persons.
However, Abdullah Al Jaber, the member secretary of Inqilab Mancha and the complainant in the case, challenged that charge sheet. He submitted a no-confidence petition on 15 January, asking the court to reconsider the investigation’s findings.
On the same day, the court directed the CID to carry out a further investigation. The supplementary report now awaited by the court is tied to that additional inquiry. Its submission could determine what further procedural steps are taken in the case after the CID completes its work.
A supplementary investigation is distinct from simply repeating an earlier probe. It allows investigators to examine matters requiring additional scrutiny after a charge sheet has been submitted, while the court retains oversight of the process. In this case, the repeated extensions mean that the court is still waiting for the CID’s final findings from that further examination.
Attack in Paltan Area
Sharif Osman Bin Hadi had formed Inqilab Mancha after the July Uprising and served as the platform’s spokesperson. The case concerns an attack that took place on 12 December in the Box Culvert Road area, which falls under Paltan Model Police Station.
Assailants riding motorcycles opened fire on Hadi during the incident. He sustained critical injuries and was later taken to Singapore for treatment. He died there on 18 December.
The legal proceedings began before his death. On 14 December, Abdullah Al Jaber filed an attempted murder case with Paltan Police Station. After Hadi died from his injuries, the case was converted into a murder case.
The shift from an attempted murder allegation to a murder case reflected the change in the victim’s condition and placed the matter within a more serious stage of criminal proceedings. The case has since involved an initial police investigation, a charge sheet, a challenge from the complainant, and a court-ordered supplementary inquiry by the CID.
What the New Date Means
The court’s decision does not resolve the allegations or alter the existing charge sheet by itself. It gives the CID more time to complete and submit its additional findings. The report is expected to be placed before the court on 3 November.
Once filed, the supplementary report will become a key document in the next phase of the case. It may address issues identified during the further investigation ordered in January. The court will then consider the report alongside the earlier charge sheet and the procedural history of the matter.
For the complainant and those connected with Inqilab Mancha, the continuing investigation remains central to efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding Hadi’s killing. The case also remains notable because of the sequence of legal developments following the original police filing: the shooting, Hadi’s death during treatment, the conversion of the complaint into a murder case, the charge sheet against 17 people, and the subsequent request for further investigation.
The repeated deferments underscore that the supplementary investigation has not yet been completed to the point where the CID can formally present its conclusions. Until the report is submitted, the court’s next major focus remains the outcome of that ongoing inquiry.
With 3 November now fixed as the next date, the court will again await the CID’s supplementary report in the murder case involving Sharif Osman Bin Hadi.
