Yao Wen Says China-Bangladesh Partnership Has Reached a Historic High Point

Bdbusinessdaily.com – Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has said relations between Dhaka and Beijing are stronger than at any previous time, pointing to closer political confidence, wider economic cooperation and more active links between people in both countries.

His remarks came in a statement issued on 1 October to mark the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Yao said the relationship has developed through sustained engagement in politics, trade, infrastructure and cultural exchange.

“Today, with deepening political mutual trust, fruitful economic and trade cooperation, and ever-warmer people-to-people exchanges, China-Bangladesh relations are at their best in history,” he said.

The ambassador described the friendship as serving the core interests of both nations and said he expected cooperation to continue moving ahead despite difficulties. His statement, titled “Over Half a Century Hand in Hand, Toward an Even Brighter Future,” looked back on the partnership’s development while setting out Beijing’s continued support for Bangladesh.

Support for Bangladesh’s role and sovereignty

Yao reiterated China’s backing for Bangladesh’s government, national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also said Beijing opposed outside interference and supported a larger Bangladeshi role in regional and global affairs.

“China supports the new Bangladeshi government in exercising governance, supports Bangladesh in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, opposes external interference, and supports Bangladesh in playing a greater role in regional and international affairs,” he said.

Such comments underline the political dimension of a relationship that has also been shaped by trade, development cooperation and transport projects. For Bangladesh, engagement with major regional partners remains important as it seeks to strengthen connectivity and expand its international presence. For China, Bangladesh occupies a significant position in South Asia and in wider regional links.

This year marks 51 years since Bangladesh and China established diplomatic relations. It is also the 10th year of cooperation connected to the Belt and Road initiative, a period Yao identified as an important part of the countries’ expanding engagement.

Prime minister’s China visit highlighted

Yao placed particular emphasis on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s first visit to China this year. He said meetings between the two countries’ leaders produced important understandings and gave the bilateral relationship added momentum for the long term.

“This year, Hon'ble Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid his first visit to China, during which the leaders of the two countries reached a series of important understandings and elevated bilateral relations to a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future in the new era, injecting strong impetus into the long-term development of bilateral ties,” he said.

The phrase “community with a shared future” reflects Beijing’s description of a closer strategic partnership. Yao’s statement presented the move as a framework for continued cooperation rather than a single agreement, linking it to the broader direction of China-Bangladesh relations.

He said the two countries have remained neighbours, friends and partners through more than five decades of shared experience. Mutual respect and sincerity, he added, have been central to the relationship even when it has encountered pressure.

A farewell after more than 1,300 days

The ambassador is due to leave Bangladesh within days after three years and nine months in the post. He described the assignment as one of the most meaningful periods of his diplomatic career, saying his time in the country had created a lasting personal connection.

“These more than 1,300 days and nights have been the most fulfilling and unforgettable chapter of my diplomatic career...As I prepare to leave, my heart is filled with profound attachment and reluctance to part.”

During his tenure, Yao said, Bangladesh experienced political change and made important choices at a critical moment. He praised the resilience and sense of national dignity shown by Bangladeshis during that period, and expressed admiration for the country’s direction under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

“Over the past three years, I have personally witnessed Bangladesh's political transformation and the historic choices this nation has made at a critical juncture,” he said.

“I hold deep admiration for the remarkable resilience and national dignity demonstrated by the Bangladeshi people, who, under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, have embarked on a new path of reform and development.”

Impressions from across Bangladesh

Yao recalled travelling beyond the capital during his assignment, including visits to Chattogram, Sylhet and Rangpur. He also spoke of walking through neighbourhoods and streets in Dhaka, experiences that gave him a close view of daily life and the changes taking place across the country.

He said Bangladesh’s young people made a particularly powerful impression. Whether employed at urban construction sites or living in rural communities, young Bangladeshis showed determination and optimism despite hardship, he said.

“Young people are a nation's most precious treasure and the very future of the country,” Yao said. “I am fully confident in a bright tomorrow for Bangladesh.”

The ambassador also referred to visible changes in infrastructure and everyday transactions. He cited viaduct construction, stronger road connections, a changing Dhaka skyline and the wider use of mobile payments as examples of rapid transformation. These developments, he suggested, illustrate changes that residents encounter in their routine lives as well as in major development plans.

Yao said the friendly greetings and smiles he received on his journeys reflected warmth toward the Chinese people. He added that he was pleased to have seen the bilateral partnership withstand headwinds while continuing to develop steadily.

As he prepares to depart, Yao’s message combined a diplomatic assessment of the relationship with a personal farewell. His central argument was that the China-Bangladesh partnership has accumulated enough trust and practical cooperation over the past half-century to keep advancing, with benefits and greater convenience for people in both countries.
