Food Minister Says Bangladesh Has Sufficient Stocks Ahead of Ramadan

Bdbusinessdaily.com – Bangladesh is entering the period before Ramadan with food reserves that are sufficient to meet national demand, Food Minister Afroza Khanam said on 10 October, while underscoring that strong planning and distribution systems will be essential to keep supplies steady in markets.

The minister said the availability of stocks provides reason for confidence that consumers will not face a shortage of essential food items during Ramadan. At the same time, she cautioned that reserves alone cannot guarantee smooth market conditions unless procurement, storage, transport and delivery are managed properly.

Her comments came after she inspected Chattogram Jetty and Silo, key facilities involved in handling and storing food supplies. She also visited the warehouses at Dewanhat CSD and inaugurated the conference room at Halishahar CSD.

Planning Must Reflect Local Demand

Afroza Khanam said food management plans should be based on the requirements of individual regions rather than relying only on national stock figures. Authorities need to consider how much food is available at each warehouse, the demand in surrounding areas and the ability of the supply system to move goods where they are needed.

Such preparation is especially important before Ramadan, when demand for several household staples can rise and market activity often becomes more sensitive to disruptions. The minister said advance assessments of likely demand, import progress and domestic procurement should help officials identify problems before they affect consumers.

She called for coordination throughout the entire chain, from purchasing food grains and other supplies to maintaining warehouses and distributing products. Better coordination, she said, can limit unnecessary delays, cut transport expenses and reduce food losses caused by poor handling or storage.

For households, the central issue is not only whether food exists in government reserves but whether it reaches markets consistently and at prices people can afford. The minister said the government is taking people’s purchasing capacity and public interest into account while working to maintain normal market supplies.

International Pressures Could Affect Prices

While expressing confidence over stock availability, Afroza Khanam noted that outside factors may still create pressure on food prices. International market volatility, rising transport costs and potential fuel shortages can affect the cost of bringing goods into the country and moving them domestically.

She said authorities must remain alert to these risks and act quickly if obstacles emerge in the supply chain. Effective monitoring of imports and local collection is needed, along with timely decisions to address bottlenecks that could slow deliveries.

The minister also emphasised the importance of resolving existing complications related to food imports. She urged closer cooperation among the departments involved so that imported items can arrive in the country without avoidable delays. A late shipment or disruption at a transport stage can have wider consequences when demand is increasing ahead of a major religious observance.

Maintaining market stability will therefore depend on practical steps as much as on headline stock levels. This includes ensuring that storage facilities work properly, transport arrangements are ready and local officials have reliable information about available supplies.

Focus on Storage Facilities and Accountability

During her visit to Chattogram, Afroza Khanam reviewed the condition and effectiveness of existing infrastructure, the pace of project implementation and the limitations of current storage capacity. She said problems identified during the inspection would be addressed through coordination with the appropriate departments and ministries.

The minister placed particular emphasis on routine maintenance of warehouses and silos. Stored food must undergo quality checks, and the equipment required to protect and manage those stocks should remain operational. She said facilities that have not been used for a long period should be brought back into service where possible.

Accurate warehouse-level records were also highlighted as an important part of food security management. Officials need up-to-date information on stock quantities, their condition and their location in order to make timely distribution decisions. Regular inspections and clear accountability, she said, are necessary to ensure that storage and delivery arrangements function as intended.

Staff shortages and administrative limitations within the food department also need practical solutions, the minister said. Addressing those weaknesses could improve the department’s ability to monitor reserves, supervise facilities and respond quickly when local supply needs change.

Preparations Ahead of Ramadan

The inspection underlined the broader challenge of converting adequate national stocks into dependable supplies for communities across the country. Warehouse management, import coordination, domestic procurement and transport planning all have a role in preventing disruptions.

Officials from the Directorate General of Food, the food department and the senior district administration attended the inspection and inauguration events, along with journalists from print and electronic media.

As Ramadan approaches, the government’s stated priority is to keep food supplies regular while preparing for higher demand and possible pressure from international markets. The minister’s message was that Bangladesh has the necessary reserves, but continued attention to logistics, facility maintenance and coordinated decision-making will determine how effectively those supplies reach consumers.
